Vol. 288 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bicycle Cost Grant.

16.

asked the Minister for Education when the scheme of two-thirds grant towards the cost of bicycles for school children was introduced.

17.

asked the Minister for Education the circumstances in which a grant of two-thirds of the cost of a bicycle is offered to a school pupil.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

A scheme on these lines has been in operation since 1966. Under the scheme grants towards the cost of bicycles are offered to children living in isolated areas where the nearest national school is a considerable distance away, and where it is not possible, or else too costly, to offer alternative transport facilities.

Does that mean that where the number of eligible children does not constitute a bus quota the children involved would not be offered the two-thirds grant towards the cost of a bicycle?

They would be considered for that grant if they are eligible for transport and apply for the grant.

Why was this not brought to the attention of the parents of the children who qualified for transport but had not sufficient number to warrant the hiring of a bus?

This last arose in the Deputy's constituency and it was in relation to a matter in which he was interested. I gather the scheme was brought to the attention of the parents but they were not interested. Subsequently, alternative arrangements were made. It is no harm to give the scheme some publicity here. Applications under the scheme will be favourably considered.

Do I take it that when letters are issued from the Department of Education to the effect that there are not sufficient children involved to warrant a bus a further statement will be issued to the effect that a grant of two-thirds the cost of a bicycle is available?

I will consider that.

Will Irish assembled bicycles qualify?

The case the Parliamentary Secretary was referring to was one where a seven year old girl was out of school for 18 months——

I permitted the Deputy to put a supplementary question but he proceeds to make a speech. The Deputy should desist.

I wish to ask a supplementary. If I am not permitted, I will keep you here until 9 o'clock tonight. I will deal with you later.

I am calling the next question.
