Vol. 289 No. 3

Written Answers. - Brittas Bay Sand Dunes.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make the preservation of the sand dunes at Brittas Bay, County Wicklow, a national charge.

In March, 1973, Wicklow County Council acquired 80 acres of sand dunes at Brittas Bay to ensure conservation of the area and to provide for its use as an amenity area. Because of the extensive use of the area by residents of Dublin city and county, including Dún Laoghaire, the authorities in these areas agreed to contribute to the cost of the acquisition and development and my Department provided a grant of £15,000 towards the scheme. I am satisfied that the preservation of the dunes can be achieved by co-operation between the local authorities concerned and I see no reason for the suggestion that this should be a national charge.
