Vol. 298 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Increases.

3.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of price increases sanctioned by him to date since the budget on 26th January 1977; and the number of price increases under consideration at present.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer given to a similar question on 16th March, 1977, in which particulars were furnished of the number of price increases recommended by the National Prices Commission and accepted by me in the period from the date of the budget, 26th January, 1977, to 11th March, 1977.

The number of price increases recommended by the National Prices Commission and accepted by me from 12th March, 1977 to 15th April, 1977, was 55.

With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question, there were 69 price increase applications under consideration as at 15th April, 1977.

In 85 days since the budget there have been approximately 122 price increases. Could the Parliamentary Secretary say if this is a world record for price increases? Will the Minister go into the Guinness Book of Records for this world record?

I doubt it.
