472.

asked the Minister for Education the present arrangements for the training and recognition of teachers of woodwork; the number of woodwork teachers in second level schools; and the number he expects to qualify this year.

The Department conducts a special residential course for the training of teachers of woodwork in Coláiste Charman, Gorey, County Wexford. This course is for candidates from a trade background and is of two years' duration.

Successful candidates are awarded the Department's woodwork teachers' certificate on completion of the course.

The Department also conducts a teacher training course in educational woodwork at the Crawford Institute, Cork. This course is for candidates with a leaving certificate background and is of three years' duration. Trainees who successfully complete the course are awarded the Department's educational woodwork teachers' certificate.

The number of woodwork teachers in second level schools at present is 878.

It is expected that 25 trainees will qualify from Gorey and 20 from Cork in 1978.
