Vol. 306 No. 10

Written Answers. - Combat Poverty Community Action Project.

106.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the moneys which have been allocated for a combat poverty community action project in the north central area of Dublin; the amount spent so far and to whom it has been paid; the composition of the management committee of the project; and if he will be prepared to expand the management committee to include local authority and Dáil representatives from the area.

In February 1978 I authorised the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty to provide a grant of up to £30,000 out of its 1978 budget towards the development of a community action project in the north centre city area of Dublin. So far, a total of £8,647 has been spent on this project. Of this £6,554 was paid directly to the project management committee and the balance of £2,093 was paid to an advertising agency in respect of costs incurred in recruiting staff for the project.

The management committee comprises ten members. Five of the members have been nominated by the North Central Community Council and one member each has been nominated by the following bodies:

—The National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty

—Mary Aikenhead Social Services

—Our Lady of Lourdes Day Care Centre, Seán McDermott Street

—Our Lady of Lourdes Social Service Centre, Seán McDermott Street

—the parents' representatives on the Boards of Management of Rutland Street Schools.

The composition of the management committee has been settled by the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty in consultation with the interests involved and any question of expanding its membership would be a matter for the latter committee. I would expect that in a project of this kind the management committee would work in close co-operation with local authority and Dáil representatives from the area and avail of their advice and assistance.
