Vol. 307 No. 1

Written Answers . - Rabies Precautions .

151.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he intends to increase the publicity campaign to heighten the public awareness of the necessity for every precaution to combat the spread of rabies in this country.

152.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of cases of suspected rabies which were reported to the authorities last year.

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 151 and 152 together. My Department's anti-rabies publicity campaign is reviewed annually in the light of experience. This year, in addition to the usual publicity, mainly on TV and radio and in the press, a further leaflet is being made available for distribution mainly through travel agencies as a warning to Irish nationals travelling abroad and to travellers and tourists visiting Ireland on the dangers that could arise from contact with animals while abroad or from the smuggling of animals into this country. No suspected case of rabies was reported to my Department over the last year.
