Vol. 317 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

318.

asked the Taoiseach if he will outline from the most recent available figures for the total numbers unemployed in the three age groups 15-19, 20-24, and 25-29, with a breakdown in each group as between males and females, the total workforce in each of these age-groups; and if he will express the total unemployed in each group as a percentage of the total work force in that group.

The most recent source of information on the labour force classified according to age groups is the 1977 Labour Force Survey, which was undertaken in late April 1977. The following table gives estimates from that survey, for persons males and females, of the numbers in the labour force and the numbers unemployed—including those seeking regular work for the first time—in the required age groups. The table also shows the numbers unemployed as a percentage of the labour force in each age group.

It should be borne in mind that there are conceptual differences between the 1975 and 1977 Labour Force Surveys, with regard to the measurement of unemployment, which prevent valid comparisons being made between the results from the two surveys.
