Vol. 326 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

388.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when telephone service will be provided for an applicant (details supplied) in County Dublin.

Service is dependent on the provision of cabling, which, because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the Dublin area, is unlikely to be carried out for at least another year.

389.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the six extra telephone lines and telex applied for by a company (details supplied) in Dublin on 10 November 1980 will be provided, as these services are essential for their business and could result in the employment of eight extra people.

The additional lines and telex applied for by this company cannot, regrettably, be provided in ordinary course until additional cabling to serve the area is completed. Because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention it is unlikely that this work will be carried out for at least another year. However, the possibility of providing service by alternative means is being explored and, if it is possible to provide service quickly in this way, this will be done.

390.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when telephone service will be restored to a person (details supplied) in County Meath.

Service will be restored within the next few days.

391.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there are a total of 91 applicants in the Killucan telephone exchange area, County Westmeath; and when they can expect to receive service.

Yes. A new telephone exchange is expected to be in service at Killucan about the end of this year. The waiting applications will then be dealt with progressively during the following 12 months or so.

393.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have the application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin for a telephone service expedited as a matter of urgency in view of the fact that this applicant is an employer and is finding it impossible to carry on his business without this service.

Service is dependent on the provision of cabling. Regrettably, because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the Dublin area, it is unlikely that the necessary work can be carried out for at least another year.

394.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin for a telephone service; and if he will have service provided as soon as possible.

Service is dependent on the provision of cabling which, because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the Dublin area, is unlikely to be carried out for at least another year.

395.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give urgent attention to the application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin for a telephone service in view of the fact that she was recently widowed and would find this service a great comfort at this time.

The application will be attended to as quickly as possible but provision of service is dependent on additional cabling work being done. Because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the Dublin area, this is unlikely to be carried out for at least another year.

396.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin as indicated in a reply to a previous parliamentary question.

It is expected that terms will be quoted to this applicant within the next three weeks or so and that service will be provided within three months of the agreement being completed.

397.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in repairing a fault on the telephone line of a person (details supplied) in County Meath which has been out of order since May 1980 and when it will be restored to full working order.

Outgoing service was withdrawn on the line on 27 March 1980 as the account had not been paid and service was fully withdrawn on 15 May. Following payment of the account service was restored on 20 August and when the line was tested that day it was found to be in working order. There is no record of a fault report since then but, when tested on 15 January, the line was found to be out of order. Service was restored on the following day.

398.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a transfer of telephone service will be provided for an applicant (details supplied) in Dublin.

It is expected that service will be provided within the next two months or so.

399.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when telephone service will be provided for applicants in Lansdowne Park, Dublin 16; the number of applicants; the reason for the delay; and whether transfer applicants will be given priority.

There are about 70 waiting applications at Lansdowne Park. Provision of service is dependent on the completion of underground cabling and a new telephone exchange at Ballyboden which is expected to be brought into service about the middle of this year. It is expected that all applications on hands will be dealt with during the second half of the year. Normally transfer applications are accorded priority treatment but it is likely that all applications will be dealt with in a general clearance within the estate over a short period of time.

400.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the urgent need for a public telephone kiosk in the Shanganagh, Shankill area of County Dublin, in view of the very considerable growth in population in this area and the large number of new families in the area; and if he will arrange for this facility as a matter of urgency.

It is planned to provide an additional kiosk at Shanganagh Cliffs, Shankill. It will be provided as soon as possible after the necessary consents to a suitable site have been obtained.

401.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that a number of people in Inchicore, Dublin, have been supplied with new telephone lines, when at the same time a person (details supplied) awaiting a transfer of telephone service has not been supplied with a line; whether this was an oversight; and, if so, if it will be corrected in the near future.

The position regarding this applicant is being specially looked into at present. If an oversight did occur it will be corrected quickly.

402.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the length of time an applicant (details supplied) in Dublin is on the telephone waiting-list; and how soon a telephone service will be provided.

This application was received in October, 1977. Service is dependent on the provision of cabling which, because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention at present, is unlikely to be carried out for at least another year.

403.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have a telephone kiosk and a post-box installed in the Monivea Park area, Ballybane, Galway.

The public telephone and posting needs of the Monivea Park area are regarded as adequately met by the public telephone kiosks at Ballybane Road and Clareview and by the letter box at Rahylin Glebe. It is not proposed therefore to provide an additional kiosk or letter box in the area.

404.

405.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will give priority to the telephone application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin, in view of the fact that the applicant has a nervous disposition because her husband's work necessitates his absence from home for long periods; and the earliest date by which it is expected telephone service will be provided.

It is expected that service will be provided within the next six months or so.

408.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate a report of a complaint in regard to a telephone line (details supplied) in Dublin; and the reasons for the apparent long break in service on this line.

A fault on the line has been repaired and service has been restored. The delay in restoring service was due to a backlog of faults in underground cables which are time-consuming to repair.

409.
