Vol. 330 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Cork Council House.

505.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will direct his Department to carry out a special investigation of the council house occupied by a person (details supplied) in County Cork and to ascertain (i) the date it was erected, (ii) its present condition with special reference to (a) unsafe wiring, (b) general dampness, (c) rotten ceilings and (d) the non-existence of bathroom facilities; and why the council did not provide the necessary repairs under their vesting repair programme.

506.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange to carry out urgent vesting repairs to a council house occupied by a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and if the repairs will include the provision of a bathroom and electrical rewiring.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 505 and 506 together.

As ownership of the house in question was vested in the occupier in 1970, Cork County Council are now precluded from carrying out any repairs or other works to the house. Works carried out by the council at the time of vesting were determined by the then Minister to have been adequate to put the house into good structural condition as required under the Housing Act, 1966. In any event work, such as the provision of bathroom facilities, would not be undertaken in putting the house into good structural condition in advance of vesting it in the tenant. In these circumstances there are no grounds for an investigation by my Department on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
