Vol. 335 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

833.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason there has been a two year delay in transferring a telephone line for a company (details supplied) in Dublin when an undertaking was given that a delay would not occur; and if he is aware that this firm which employs 12 people is now at risk because of the lack of service.

It has not been possible to provide service for the company named so far because the cable which served the premises previously was utilised for other purposes before this application was received. Regrettably a forecast of earlier provision could not be met because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the 01 area.

It is expected that service will be provided within the next three months or so.

834.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will instruct the Telephone Accounts Manager to cease sending an account to a person (details supplied) in Malahide, County Dublin, for rental charges for a period when the telephone was out of order.

A final notice was issued in error to the subscriber and a letter of apology has been sent to him.

835.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will direct that an applicant in Dublin who is in a very distressed emotional condition as her daughter was a victim of the Stardust Disaster and on whose behalf medical evidence has been tendered, will be provided with a telephone service immediately; if not, the reason; and if he will make a statement on the delay that has surrounded this application.

It will be necessary to carry out additional cabling work in the area before service can be provided. It will not, regrettably, be possible to carry out this work for about a year because of the large volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the Dublin area. Telephone service will be provided immediately the cabling work is completed.

836.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a business premises (details supplied) in Dublin 1 as the present lack of telephone facilities will shortly lead to its closure with the resultant loss of jobs; and if he is aware that already two people have lost their employment as a direct result of this situation.

A survey is being carried out to ascertain when it will be possible to meet this application. The applicant will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

Service has been restored on the main line. The fault on the other line, which is in the underground cable, will be repaired within the next few days. Because of the number of such faults, which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there has been delay in repairing them.

840.

I am aware of the application which was received in August 1978. It has not been possible to provide service so far because of the large volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the Dublin area. It is expected that service will be provided within about a year.

A transfer of service will be provided as soon as possible but it is unlikely that it will be possible to do so before the end of this year. It is regretted that a forecast given to the applicant in July 1981 could not be realised because of the large volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the 01 area.

There are eight waiting applications with Warrenstown, Dunboyne, addresses. Cabling and cable distribution work to enable these applications to be met is expected to commence before the end of this year and will be completed in 1983.

Conversion of some subscribers' lines from overhead to underground will be effected in conjunction with the cabling work referred to and this should result in an improved service for the subscribers involved.

855.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Meath; when his original application was received; if the delay in his case is normal; and, if other people in this area, whose applications are with his Department for a shorter time, have since had telephones installed.

It is expected that telephone service will be provided for the person named next year. The application was received in November 1978.

859.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of a complaint by a person (details supplied) in Cabra, Dublin 7, that his most recent telephone account included a telephone call to Cambridge, which was listed as being made on 8 March 1982 for £5.11 and that when he complained he was told that the matter would be investigated and that he has now received a final and threatening demand to pay or be disconnected; if he is further aware that he is adamant that he never made this call; and if, in view of the fact that there is widespread abuse at present of such operator-assisted trunk calls he will ensure that this matter is dealt with urgently and sympathetically particularly as the person is elderly and has a limited income.

There is no evidence so far that the call did not originate from the subscriber's telephone line. Investigations however are continuing and should be completed within the next week.
