Vol. 346 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Cork Industries.

342.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the steps he is taking to provide an industry in the Blarney area, County Cork, in view of the high unemployment there.

The Industrial Development Authority are making continuing efforts to secure new industries for Blarney and surrounding areas. Blarney is within five miles of the industrial estates provided by the IDA at Hollyhill and Kilbarry on the outskirts of Cork City. At Hollyhill, Apple Computers Ltd. employs 200 people and this figure will be further increased when the company reach full production. In addition, eight of the ten small industry units provided by the IDA at Hollyhill are currently occupied or reserved and the remaining two are being actively promoted for new small industries.

The IDA have located a number of major industrial projects at Kilbarry where North Star Computers and Western Digital have the potential to provide 400 jobs when they reach full production.

The IDA are particularly anxious to secure a suitable project to occupy the factory space available as a result of the closure of Irish Polysacks Ltd.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the efforts made to have the Home Grown Timbers factory in Fermoy, County Cork reopened.

Since the closure of Home Grown Timbers the IDA circulated all their foreign offices with a profile of the company. They have continued to try to interest both Irish parties and foreign investors in a takeover. I understand that the receiver is in discussion with several interested parties.
