asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department will grant immediate approval to the application from Laois County Council for the purpose of improving the water supply at Mountmellick which is totally inadequate and which presents a very serious problem to the local fire brigade in dealing with fires in the town.

On 13 March 1985 I conveyed approval in principle to the preliminary report submitted by Laois County Council for the Mountmellick water supply improvement scheme, subject to some minor modifications. I also conveyed approval to the preparation of contract documents for the advance section of this scheme which provides for the laying of new distribution mains and the replacement of valves and hydrants to improve the water pressure for firefighting and other purposes. It is a matter for the council to prepare and submit contract documents for the scheme to my Department.
