Vol. 359 No. 8

Written Answers. - Exchequer Pay Bill.

39.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the estimated size of the Exchequer pay bill for (a) 1985; and (b) 1986 taking account only of pay levels now known.

I would refer the Deputy to Table 3 on page (x) of the Revised Estimates for Public Services 1985 which indicates that the estimated cost of Exchequer pay and pensions in 1985 is £2,464 million. This figure covers all non-capital expenditure by the Exchequer on the pay and pension of civil servants, the Defence Forces, the Garda, teachers and health employees together with amounts for pay included in grants to non-commercial State-sponsored bodies, universities and colleges. It includes all pay costs such as basic pay, employers PRSI contributions, overtime and allowances.

It will not be possible to assess with certainty the size of the Exchequer pay and pension bill for 1986 until the Government have completed their examination of the departmental Estimates for that year.
