Vol. 359 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dollymount (Dublin) Strand Safety.

73.

asked the Minister for the Environment the action he is taking about car parking and speeding on Dollymount Strand in view of the fact that a child was killed by a car on that beach last year.

Dollymount Strand is an open space under the control of the parks department of Dublin Corporation and is subject to by-laws and made pursuant to the Open Spaces Act, 1906. These by-laws prescribe, inter-alia, a speed limit of 12 mph on the beach. Responsibility for ensuring safety on the beach rests primarily with Dublin Corporation. While, I have no direct function in the matter, I will ask Dublin Corporation to carry out a review of safety in relation to traffic and parking on the beach. In so far as contraventions of the provisions of the Road Traffic Acts in relation to driving or parking may be concerned, responsibility for enforcement of these provisions rests with the Garda Síochána.
