Vol. 360 No. 6

Written Answers. - Air Pollution at Power Station.

19.

asked the Minister for Energy the approximate annual quantity of sulphur dioxide that will be emitted from the Moneypoint power station; and if he intends to install sulphur recovery equipment to prevent air pollution from this plant.

It is estimated that both the maximum and average annual emissions of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere from the 300 megawatt generating unit to be commissioned this year at Moneypoint power station will be about 23,000 tonnes per annum. The emissions of the further Moneypoint sets to be commissioned in 1986 and 1987 will be of a magnitude similar to that of the first set.

The design of this station conforms to stringent conditions for air quality standards set out in the planning approval granted by Clare County Council. To meet these conditions it was not necessary to install the devices in question.

Because of efficient dispersion, the effect on air quality will be well below the stringent levels set for ambient concentration by Clare County Council, and even below the long term goals for air quality prepared by the World Health Organisation.
