Total expenditure — Defence and Army Pensions Votes — was £258 million for 1984 and £275 million (provisional outturn) for 1985. The extra security costs attributable to the Northern Ireland situation are estimated at £95 million for 1984 and £100 million for 1985. These amounts represent about 37 per cent and 36 per cent of expenditure for 1984 and 1985 respectively or about £28 per head of population.
