Vol. 369 No. 8

Written Answers. - Post-Primary Education Statistics.

216.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the number of (a) male and female principals employed in post-primary schools; (b) male and female vice-principals employed in post-primary schools; (c) male and female A and B post holders; and if he will outline the regulations for promotion in post-primary schools.

217.

asked the Minister for Education if he will list the post-primary schools covered by his Department; the number of staff in each such school; the pupil enrolment in each school; the number of A posts and B posts in each school; and if he will give a breakdown of the type of schools involved e.g. secondary, community, comprehensive and vocational schools.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 216 and 217 together.

A list of post-primary schools is published annually on behalf of my Department. This list gives the names and addresses of all post-primary schools and the numbers of boys and girls enrolled in each school. I shall furnish the Deputy with a copy of the latest edition of the list.

The number and category of the posts of responsibility for each school are specified by my Department based on a points rating calculated on the number of recognised pupils in the previous school year. The nomination of teachers to posts of responsibility in secondary schools is based on procedures agreed on between the management and teaching organisations. Nominations in the case of vocational schools and community and comprehensive schools are a function of the relevant vocational education committee or board of management, subject to the general provisions of Memorandum V7. I shall send the Deputy a copy of the relevant documents.

The remainder of the data as requested by the Deputy is not readily available from the Department's records. To collect and compile the data as requested would involve an inordinate amount of time on the part of the staff of the Department.
