asked the Minister for Health if an investigation on the subject matter of the recent "Today-Tonight" programme on RTE dealing with the illegal slaughtering of cattle and illegal sale of meat in this country will be held; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - “Today-Tonight” Programme.
As a result of the existence of an illegal traffic — some of it cross border traffic — in "casualty animals" my Department was in touch with the health boards and asked them to exercise special vigilance so that this traffic, where it exists, could be detected and prevented. I am satisfied that the health boards adequately discharge their responsibilities in this area.
I might mention that on the application of the North-Eastern Health Board, I have already made a "closure order" under the Food Hygiene Regualtions in respect of one of the premises featured prominently in the "Today-Tonight" programme and I understand that the health board is considering making application to me for a closure order in respect of a second premises which also featured prominently in the programme.
I have no proposals for a special investigation by my Department as a result of the "Today-Tonight" programme.
