Vol. 372 No. 7

Written Answers. - Income Tax

48.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated amount of tax overpaid by PAYE workers in 1987; the amount of tax refunded to PAYE workers in 1986; and whether any interest was paid to PAYE workers in 1986 as a result of such overpayment.

Statistics are not available which would enable an estimate to be made of the PAYE tax overpaid by PAYE workers for any given period of time. Figures of the total amount of PAYE tax repaid in 1987 will not be available until after the end of that year.

The total amount of PAYE tax repaid in 1986 was £81.8 million.

As regards the question of interest on repayments of PAYE tax there is neither interest on amounts of tax underpaid and subsequently recovered nor is there interest on amounts of tax overpaid and subsequently refunded to the taxpayer.
