There has been no reduction in 1987 in the overall allocation notified by my Department for the repair and upkeep of the the roads system. A sum of £29.8 million has been provided in the Department's Vote for grants to road authorities for maintenance works. This is identical to the provision included in the Estimates published by the previous Government in January last and is an increase of £70,000 over the corresponding provision in 1986.
