Vol. 374 No. 5
asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of all trade union amalgamations occurring this year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Minister for Labour whether the £60,000 provided for trade union amalgamation in the 1987 Estimates will be expended in full; and if he will give details of how the figure has been or will be allocated.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 and 90 together.
Transfers of engagements took place in 1987 from the United Stationary Engine Drivers', Cranemen, Firemen, Motormen and Machinemen's Trade Union (USEDU) to the Federated Workers Union of Ireland (FWUI) and from the National Association of Transport Employees (NATE) to the FWUI. Grants totalling £53,023 have been paid from the allocation of £60,000 under Subhead R in my Department's Vote for trade union amalgamations in 1987. Details of those grants are as follows:

April 1987 |

Arising from the USEDU transfer to the FWUI, a further grant of £16,775 is expected to be paid before the end of the year which will result in an excess on Subhead R. That excess will be met from savings elsewhere on my Department's Vote.
The Programme for National Recovery indicates that I will be having discussions with the social partners about changes in industrial relations and one of the matters which I propose to include in these discussions will be measures to encourage the rationalisation of the trade union movement.
