I am informed by the Garda authorities that at present there is a total of 21 neighbourhood watch schemes in operation in the area in question involving some 8,000 households. The Garda authorities are satisfied with the operation of the schemes in terms of the numbers involved and the high level of community support and commitment.
The Garda authorities have also informed me that a further four schemes are in the process of being organised in the area. Any further expansion depends on the willingness of members of the community to voluntarily participate in such schemes. Every assistance will be given by the Garda to any group wishing to become involved in a neighbourhood watch scheme.
