Vol. 377 No. 6

Written Answers - Mater Hospital, Dublin, Extension.

25.

asked the Minister for Health the amount spent by his Department to date on the extension to the Mater Hospital (Public) Dublin 7; when the work was completed; the number of beds it provides; the reason it has not been opened; and the cost of keeping it maintained while closed.

To date £30 million has been spent on the extension to the hospital. The building was completed and handed over to the Mater Hospital authorities on the 25 April 1986; 350 beds are available in this phase of the overall development.

Because of the limited resources available it has not been possible to proceed with the opening of the new extension. However, officers of my Department are at present holding discussions with the hospital authorities in the Mater which I would hope will lead to a partial opening of the new wing during 1988.

The cost of maintaining this new extension to date amounts to £448,000.
