Vol. 379 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Shooting of Irish Persons in Gibraltar.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the contact which has been made, on the official level, with the British Government concerning the recent events in Gibraltar.

I gave details of the Government's approach on this matter in my replies to questions last week. The contact, which is ongoing, was through our London Embassy and the Conference Secretariat.

Has any further information on these incidents become available since the debate of a week ago and, if so, can the Taoiseach tell us what it is?

That next important step in the matter is the holding of the coroner's inquest and I would not like to say too much about it until that has been held. The Deputy will be aware of a sequel to the matter, unfortunately, in the cemetery in Belfast today when there was some loss of life.

Can the Taoiseach tell us whether he is proposing to institute an in depth inquiry into the proceedings and whether in such an inquiry the role which the Spanish authorities appear to have played will be included? Furthermore will the Taoiseach indicate whether the three explosions which have taken place in the cemetery in Belfast a while ago come into the picture?

We are having an injection of new matter into this question.

I replied to that matter last week and indicated the action we have taken. I have nothing further to add at this stage and I do not wish to add anything further at this stage.

Question No. 3.

I am not pursuing the question for the precise reason the Taoiseach indicated.

Question No. 3.

Will the Taoiseach say whether there is any possibility of speeding up the holding of the inquest by the authorities in Gibraltar because we are told it will not be held until some time in May and that there is no urgency about it?
