Vol. 383 No. 9

Written Answers. - Shannon Authority.

72.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the Government's attitude and policy towards the setting up of a Shannon authority in line with the recently published IFA document which was handed to the Minister of State at his Department in Athlone recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At the recent launch of the IFA consultant's report on the River Shannon in Athlone, the Minister of State at my Department, with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, announced the establishment of a forum at which the views of the various bodies interested in the Shannon could be co-ordinated. There are so many interests involved with the Shannon that this proposal has obvious merits. Such a forum will be brought into existence, with the goodwill of those concerned, in order to facilitate open discussions on the varying viewpoints. The Minister of State, Deputy Noel Treacy will be writing in the very near future to the various interests, inviting all concerned to take part.
