Written Answers. - Increased Estimates Allocations.

100.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the increase in finance under Vote 22 (B3) in the 1990 Estimates.

The allocation for Subhead B3 in 1990 was increased in order to provide for the transfer of the provisions for cleaning and private security which were formerly included under Subhead B1 of the Courts vote and for necessary maintenance and minor improvement works at court premises and offices.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the increase in finance in Vote No. 20 (D) and in Vote No. 20 (B3) in the 1990 Estimates; and if he will outline the extra benefits from same.

The allocation for Subhead B3 in 1990 was increased in order to provide for the necessary maintenance and minor improvement works at more than 700 Garda stations and at other major Garda complexes including the Phoenix Park Depot and Harcourt Square in Dublin and the Garda College in Templemore.

An additional £500,000 is being provided under Subhead D of the Garda Sióchána Vote, 1990 to meet the cost of a full issue of uniform to the Force next year. The cost of the previous uniform issued at the end of 1988 and early 1989 was spread over the Votes for those years.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the increase in finance in Vote No. 19 (H) in the 1990 Estimates; and if extra benefits will arise from same.

The increased allocation in the 1990 Estimates for the Garda Síochána Complaints Board arises mainly from the assignment of four additional staff to the board and an anticipated increase in the number of disciplinary tribunal hearings.

I consider that the extra staff should help very considerably to ease the difficulties which the Board has been experiencing with its workload.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the increase in finance under Vote No. 23 (B3) in the 1990 Estimates.

£400,000 of the increase is accounted for by the cost of fitting out storage space in Santry to accommodate 2.5 million land record files. The remainder of the increase is due mainly to the provision for maintenance in respect of the Registry of Deeds, Henrietta Street, Land Registry in Chancery Street and Land Registry in Nassau Building, Setana Centre.
