Ceist:

40 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, at the recent meeting of the British-Irish parliamentary tier the Sellafield nuclear processing plant and its damaging effects on the east coast of Ireland was discussed; if he will outline the plans which are being put in place to ease and eliminate the threat from this plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 40 together.

A debate did indeed take place at the plenary session of the British-Irish inter-parliamentary body in May of this year on environmental issues affecting Ireland and Britain, including the discharge of nuclear waste into the Irish Sea from the reprocessing plant at Sellafield. The interparliamentary body adopted a report on this and other environmental questions, which has been submitted to both Governments and is now under consideration by them.

As to the other part of the Deputy's question, this is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Energy, who has primary responsibility for Government policy in this area.
