Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - Aid to Bangladesh.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

49 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the budget sub-head from which Ireland's contribution to the EC Aid Programme for Bangladesh as agreed at Council on 13/14 May 1991, will be provided.

In the tragic aftermath of the typhoon disaster in Bangladesh the Foreign Affairs Council on 13-14 May 1991 decided on a special aid package of 60 million ECUs from member states for relief operations in Bangladesh to be supplemented by a further 20 million ECUs from the Community budget. The Commission had already allocated 10 MECU. Ireland's share of the 60 MECUs was £275,000 which has been paid through subhead E — Disaster Relief — of the Vote for International Co-operation. The funds are being provided from the national lottery surplus.
