52 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the progress which was made in discussions with his Department and the military authorities by representatives of the FCA to establish a representative body on a formal basis.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 58 together.

Following a number of meetings between representatives — civil and military — of my Department and a delegation representing members of An Foras Cosanta Aitiuil and An Slua Muiri I am pleased to say that very considerable progress has been made in regard to the proposed new representative structures for those forces.

I anticipate that the discussions on the representative arrangements will be finalised in the very near future and the Defence Force Regulations to make statutory provision for these arrangements will then be signed by me.
