Adjournment Debate Matters.

The Ceann Comhairle wishes to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to him under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case:

Deputies Flaherty and Barnes — the nature and full extent of the radioactive pollution discovered in seaweed on the Sellafield shoreline and whether any tests have been done to ascertain levels on this side of the Irish Sea; Deputy Moynihan — the serious position in relation to the inadequate sewerage system in Kenmare town, County Kerry; Deputy McGrath — the impending industrial action at CBS primary school, Mullingar, County Westmeath, by the INTO because of the failure of the Department of Education to recognise certain pupils enrolled at that school; Deputy Richard Bruton — the threatened bed closures and longer waiting lists due to the squeeze on health board budgets; Deputy Jim Higgins — the decision by the Higher Education Authority to restrict the numbers of graduates to the higher diploma in education courses from next September and the need for the Minister for Education to intervene therein; Deputy Gilmore — the refusal by the community welfare service to pay supplementary welfare allowance to the dependants of postal workers who are still working but who are not being paid wages by An Post; Deputy De Rossa — the need for the Department of the Environment to review its decision to grant approval for the linking of the Ballymun Road to the northern cross road; Deputy Durkan — the failure of the Minister for Energy having regard to the revised Programme for Government, to take any action to protect more than 100 jobs at Lullymore briquette factory, County Kildare which is due to close on 5 June with devastating consequences for the area; Deputy Garland — the situation arising whereby members of the security forces who are not members of the Roman Catholic faith were disciplined for not attending Mass and other RC religious observances; Deputy Gerry O'Sullivan — the serious escalation of the free legal aid dispute in Cork and the appeal by two senior judges to have the matter resolved; Deputy Gay Mitchell — whether the Minister for Industry and Commerce will take steps to amend the provisions which restrict the insurance cover for children in view of the terrible circumstances parents can be left in if a young child dies; Deputy Allen — recent comments by a Circuit Court judge in Cork regarding the legal aid dispute and the recent serious incidents in Cork where criminals, who would normally be in prison, are roaming the streets of Cork because of the breakdown of the Criminal Courts system; Deputy Owen — the difficulties for primary schools in getting cheques from the Department of Education, for the payment of school secretaries and caretakers, during the postal strike; Deputy Ryan — the crisis that exists at Scoil an Duinninigh, Malahide, County Dublin, due to the lack of accommodation for September 1992.

The Ceann Comhairle has selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Flaherty and Barnes, Moynihan and Gilmore.
