Vol. 421 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

The Ceann Comhairle wishes to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to him under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: Deputy Deenihan—The need to provide the necessary finance for the provision of additional accommodation for engineering, building construction and drawing at Tarbert Comprehensive School, County Kerry; Deputy Gregory — the need to have a remedial teacher sanctioned for St. Paul's primary school, North Brunswick Street, Dublin, now the only Dublin inner city school serving a severely disadvantaged area without a remedial teacher; Deputy Ferris — the widespread concern at the proposal of the South-Eastern Health Board to move up to 80 patients from St. Patrick's Geriatric Hospital, Cashel to St. Luke's Psychiatric Hospital, Clonmel, with the consequent distress to the patients and families concerned and which is contrary to the Planning for the Future document; Deputy Cotter — the case of a teacher (details supplied) in County Monaghan who has suffered from ME — Chronic Fatigue Syndrome — for more than four years and who has been refused early retirement by the Department of Education; Deputy J. Higgins — in view of the increased demand from young Irish emigrants on the support services provided by the Catholic charities of the Archdiocese or New York and in view of their urgent plea for additional financial support the need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to make supplementary finance available to restore the grant to its former level; Deputy Ahern — the question of office accommodation for the new blocks of Revenue work recently designated by the Minister for Finance for Dundalk and the reported proposed use of portacabins for such accommodation; Deputy Gilmore — the temporary embargo which has been imposed on the recruitment of participants to social employment schemes; Deputy G. O'Sullivan — the serious situation in Cork city where housing applications have now reached over 2,000; Deputy Roche — the removal yesterday of tags identifying trees which may be felled under the licence granted by the Minister for Energy to the owners of Coolattin Wood and the urgent need to ensure compliance with the licence; Deputy O'Donoghue — the uncertainty as to the title to fishing rights in the State and the importance of diffusing the tension thereby created by making available accurate information on ownership; Deputy Ryan — the crisis that is arising in the FCA as a result of hundreds of members throughout the country being denied access to the one week summer training camp; Deputy Enright — the closure of the textile factory in Rathdowney which has been in business for over 30 years; the loss of jobs resulting from this closure and the action the Minister intends to take to provide alternative employment in the area.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Ferris, Deenihan and Cotter.
