Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Upgrading of Permanent Defence Force.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

59 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Defence if, in regard to the commitment given in the Review of the Programme for Government, he will outline the specific proposals the Government have for the upgrading of the Permanent Defence Force; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government are committed to ensuring that the Permanent Defence Force have the necessary personnel, equipment and training to enable them to fulfil their roles in contributing to the preservation of the security of the State, assisting the community in various ways and contributing to international peace.

Over the years, the overall strength of the Permanent Defence Force has been maintained at a satisfactory operational level and it is the Government's intention that it will be so maintained. A review of structures, numbers and deployment, is being carried out with a view to optimising the use of military personnel.

A substantial investment has been and will continue to be made in Information Technology, Fishery Protection equipment, Communications, Aircraft and Buildings.
