Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Coastguard Service.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Ceist:

63 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if there have been any discussions between himself and the Ministers for Marine and Justice with a view to setting up a coastguard service modelled on the French and US services to properly police our coastline which is currently unguarded.

Regular liaison takes place between my Department and the Departments of Justice, Finance and Marine on issues of common interest and on matters where co-operation in operational matters is required. The incidence of co-operation has increased in recent times and will be further developed.

The Naval Service provides assistance on request to other Departments and Government agencies in the capacity of rendering aid to the Civil Authority.
