Vol. 432 No. 8

Written Answers. - Courtown (Wexford) Harbour Pier.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

87 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the acute need for remedial works at Courtown harbour pier which has been requested by Wexford County Council; and the steps, if any, he intends to take to resolve the matter.

Courtown harbour is owned by Wexford County Council who are responsible for its maintenance and repair.

The Department of the Marine is formulating a fishery harbour development plan of the period 1994 through 1999. In this regard, the Department sought proposals for development projects in the fisheries interest from the various mari-time local authorities. Wexford County Council in its submission listed Courtown harbour as its third priority for development, after Kilmore Quay and Duncannon.

The Council has indicated that the harbour walls require piling and grouting, augmented rock armouring to the south pier and dredging of the harbour entrance. It is estimated that this work would cost approximately £150,000. Possible inclusion of this project in the development plan will depend in the first instance on the cost/benefits involved and also on the level of funding available for such works under the next round of Structural Funds. Decisions have yet to be made in this regard.
