My Department is currently preparing legislative proposals which will give effect to a new electricity market to stimulate efficiency and respond effectively to the wide variety of consumers' needs. It is also intended that the proposed measures should take account of the proposed EU Electricity Directive, currently being discussed in the Council of Ministers, to liberalise the EU electricity market.
