Vol. 454 No. 7

Coroners (Amendment) Bill, 1995: Motion to Discharge Order for Second Stage.

I move: "That the order for Second Stage of the Coroners (Amendment) Bill, 1995, be discharged and that the Bill be withdrawn."

Question put and agreed to.

Further to the question put by Deputy O'Donoghue and in view of the emergency in our city whereby stolen cars were rammed into shop fronts two nights running, is any special action being taken by the Government?

The Deputy should consult my office in that regard. It does not arise now.

The reason I ask is that there may be a need for emergency legislation if this happens again. Has any consideration been given to that?

The Deputy must pursue that matter in another way.

Does the Government envisage introducing new legislation enshrining the legal rights of people affected by the carelessness of the Blood Transfusion Board?

There are no plans at present to introduce legislation.

In response to a parliamentary question recently, the Minister for Justice said she would bring forward measures to combat the serious drug problem in the city which would involve several Bills. When will that drugs policy be announced, because the issue is urgent? When will the legislation be brought before the House?

Can the Deputy be more precise about the legislation he envisages?

The Government has set up an interdepartmental committee to tackle the drugs problem and it will report back shortly.
