Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Civilian Staff Recruitment.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

115 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice when 200 civilians will be recruited to facilitate the release of an equivalent number of gardaí for operational duties as indicated by her on several occasions since her anti-crime package was approved in July 1996; if she will give details in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20157/96]

On 2 July 1996 the Government approved a series of anti-crime measures which included, inter alia, provision for the appointment of 200 additional civilian staff for the Garda Síochána to enable an equivalent number of gardaí to be released to operational duties. A total of 19 posts have been filled by clerical/administrative staff to date. It is envisaged that a further 27 such posts will be filled in 1996.

The procedures for the filling of the balance of these posts, which require the holding of Civil Service Commission competitions, are in train and it is anticipated that the positions will be filled in the early part of 1997.
