Vol. 481 No. 7
210 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the waiting time for driver testing for passenger cars and commercial vehicles for each of the test centres in County Westmeath. [17138/97]
The waiting period for driving tests in buses and trucks in Athlone and Mullingar is at present six to eight weeks. For other categories of tests, the waiting periods are up to 19 weeks and 25 weeks respectively for Athlone and Mullingar. However, applicants in need of an early test for urgent reasons, such as employment, are normally accommodated within six-ten weeks.
In an effort to help reduce waiting times, Saturday testing is currently being conducted. In addition, a package of productivity measures is being negotiated which will also provide for the engagement of a number of testers on short-term contract.
211 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the success rate for persons taking driver tests in each test centre in Westmeath for each of the last four years; and if he will compare these figures with those from each other test centre in the country for the same period. [17140/97]
The percentage pass rates for driving tests in each of the driving test centres for the four years 1993 to 1996 are set out in the following table:
