Vol. 495 No. 7

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Pursuant to the terms of Standing Order 31, I request leave to move a motion to adjourn the House to discuss an issue of national importance, the closure of the Mullingar based factory, Tarkett Somer AG, and the future job prospects for the 141 workers who will be made redundant over the coming weeks.

Pursuant to the terms of Standing Order 31, I request leave to move a motion to adjourn the House to discuss a matter of national importance, the closure of Tarkett Somer AG, Mullingar, County Westmeath, with the loss of 141 direct jobs and many other associated jobs in the community; the impact this closure will have on the workers and their families and on the economic and social life of Mullingar and the surrounding areas, noting particularly that these job losses represent approximately 20 per cent of the industrial jobs in the area; and the need for the Government to establish a task force to find a replacement industry for this extensive plant.

Having considered the matters fully I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motions.

Pursuant to the terms of Standing Order 31, I request leave to move a motion to adjourn the House to discuss a matter of specific and important national interest requiring urgent consideration, the circumstances in which members of a family residing in the Clonsilla area of Dublin west were arrested at 6.45 a.m. and brought to a Garda station where they were held for four and a half hours without any prior notice by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform of a deportation order apparently made on 20 October; the necessity for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform on humanitarian grounds to reverse the decision to deport this family; and the steps the Minister intends to take to ensure that such an affront to natural justice and common decency does not occur again.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

Pursuant to the terms of Standing Order 31, I request leave to move a motion to adjourn the House to discuss the need for massively increased investment in rail services and infrastructure in the interests of public safety, to avert a public tragedy and to give the public a better and more efficient rail system.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
