Vol. 516 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic, I have received notice from Deputy Yates and I now call on him to state the matter.

In accordance with Standing Order 31 I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to debate the urgent matter of the imminent two day and three day strikes by Dublin Bus which will inevitably impose serious difficulties for commuters, the elderly, students and city centre businesses; and the need for the Minister for Public Enterprise to set out in the Dáil a statement of the Government's understanding why the LRC talks failed, the future level of State subvention to Dublin Bus and the contingency arrangements to alleviate hardship and the introduction of bus competition.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Sargent and I now call on him to state the matter.

In accordance with Standing Order 31 I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to allow for a debate on the radical measures now needed to be implemented by the Government to reduce waste and ensure the residue is recycled, given the latest revelations that domestic and industrial waste has risen by 40% over the past three years and that local communities around the country are now, more than ever, facing a major waste crisis.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
