Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Wind Turbines.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

91 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if it will become feasible for companies to construct on-site wind turbines to avoid a future climate change levy which is already in place in the UK on electricity produced from fossil fuels. [24543/01]

The generation of electricity from wind power is part of the renewable energy based electricity market which is liberalised in its entirety since February 2000. Companies are now free to construct on-site wind turbines for the purpose of generating electricity subject only to the necessary permissions from the Commission for Electricity Regulation.

The implementation of a climate change levy by way of legislation is primarily a taxation issue and a matter for my colleague the Minister for Finance, Deputy McCreevy.
