Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

607 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the number in respect of the sections of her Department or boards or agencies operating under the aegis of her Department, it is proposed to decentralise which are currently housed in leased office space or premises; the annual amount paid in rent in each case; when the lease runs out in each case; if there are financial penalties involved in the breaking of the lease in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [31306/03]

Under the decentralisation programme announced recently by my colleague, the Minister for Finance, all sections of my Department based in Dublin will move to the towns of Drogheda – 300 jobs, Buncrana – 120 jobs, Donegal – 230 jobs, Carrick-on-Shannon – 225 jobs and Sligo – 100 jobs. The locations of specific sections have not yet been finalised. The Department's information services division will also be relocated, although the location has yet to be determined. The Combat Poverty Agency and Comhairle, which are under the aegis of my Department, will be relocated to Monaghan and Carrickmacross, respectively. The sections of my Department to be relocated which are currently housed in leased accommodation in Dublin are Oisín House in Pearse Street, Gandon House in Amiens Street, Landen House in Townsend Street and No. 3 Parnell Square. Details in respect of leases and rents on these properties are a matter for the Office of Public Works. I have no views on the decentralisation of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, although I would like to state that there is more water in Cavan than in Leeson Lane.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

608 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the numbers employed by category and grade in her Department in which decentralisation is involved; the current numbers by grade in each office decentralised to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30817/03]

There were 4,304 posts filled in my Department at 1 December last. When one takes account of worksharing staff, there are 4,731 people filling the posts. The Department's structure is divided on a regional basis, with ten geographical regions, five decentralised provincial offices and a headquarters at Dublin. As part of the programme of decentralisation announced by the Minister for Finance, it is proposed that some 1,300 posts in the headquarters of my Department and its agencies which are based in Dublin will move to various provincial locations. A breakdown of posts in my Department's Dublin headquarters is outlined in the first table which follows this reply. There are 25 staff in the Combat Poverty Agency and 85 staff in Comhairle, the agencies of the Department designated for decentralisation. My Department has decentralised offices in Sligo, Letterkenny, Longford, Waterford and Dundalk. The number of posts by grade in each of these locations at 1 December last is outlined in the second table.
