Vol. 44 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is intended to take the business as on the Order Paper. It should be stated, however, with regard to the National Monuments Bill, that two Government amendments have been circulated only just now. If there is no objection, the Bill will be taken as on the Order Paper, but if there are Senators who object to the taking of that Bill, then of course it will not be taken to-day. There is another point. As the House should be aware, next Wednesday is a Church holiday. It is not the practice to meet on Church holidays. The other House is not meeting at all next week. Therefore, assuming we adjourn to-day or to-morrow, we will not meet until the 15th December. The Solicitors Bill is being considered in the Dáil to-day and I understand that all stages are to be given in the Dáil to-day. There is a desire to start the compensation fund provided for in the Bill at the beginning of the next solicitors' year, that is to say, on the 6th January. If the House, therefore, would be prepared to take the Second Stage of the Solicitors Bill either this evening at 7 o'clock, if we are ready then, or to-morrow, the Committee Stage could be postponed for a fortnight. I think it is essentially a Committee Bill. If the House is willing to do that, we can take the Second Stage either this evening or to-morrow, as may be arranged, and then take the Committee Stage on the 15th, after an interval of a fortnight.

Ba mhaith liom ceist a chur faoin mBille Séadchomharthaí. Tá na leasuithe ós ár gcomhair. Creidim gur mian leis an gComhairle Ealaíon féin, go gcuirfí roinnt athruithe ar an mBille. Tuigim gur glacadh comhairle ón Seanadóir Ó hAodha, agus má tá na leasuithe ar aon dul leis na leasuithe ar mhaith leis an gComhairle Ealaíon a dhéanamh, ní bheadh aon locht agam ar an mBille.

Sin rud nach féidir liom a innsint, ach tá fhios againn an leasuithe a bhí ag an Aire an tseachtain seo caite. I am not aware whether the amendments to the National Monuments Bill are the amendments mentioned by the Arts Council, but I understand they are the only amendments about which there has been any discussion. One of them is only a formal one. Perhaps the Senator could settle that in the interval.

Could we settle the other question, the matter of the Solicitors Bill?

We would be prepared to take the Second Reading of the Solicitors Bill either to-night or to-morrow and defer the Committee Stage to the next sitting.

Agreed accordingly.
