Seanad Éireann díospóireacht -

Vol. 134 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I would like to welcome Senators back after the summer recess, looking refreshed. I am sure we will have a non-controversial enlightened session which will be of benefit to the country and to ourselves and I look forward to that.

I have received notice from Senator Ó Cuív that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to provide resources to repair damage caused by coastal erosion in County Galway.

I have received notice from Senator Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, in view of the difficulties at Mount Usher Gardens, to provide funds for the immediate provision of sewerage systems to service Ashford and Rathnew for connection to the treatment works at Wicklow town.

I have received notice from Senator McGowan of the following:

The difficulty that Irish citizens have in securing a visa to visit the United States while a citizen from Northern Ireland does not require a visa.

I received a notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to make an immediate provision of £50,000 for the rebuilding programme at the Hirschfeld Centre in Dublin in line with the clearly expressed wishes of Seanad Éireann and Dublin Corporation.

I have received notice from Senator Costello of the following:

The need for the Minister for Justice to ensure that proper procedures in accordance with international human rights conventions and natural justice are put in place so that those seeking asylum in Ireland are humanely treated and their case fairly considered.

I have received a notice from Senator Keogh of the following:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to confirm his commitment and that of the Government to the development of Dún Laoghaire Harbour, and, in particular, its ferry services.

I have also received notice from Senator Kennedy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to give approval for the contract for a new reservoir and town water tower at Castletroy, County Limerick.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Ó Cuív, Ross, Norris, Costello, Keogh and Kennedy as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Ó Cuív's and Senator Ross's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Costello, Norris, Keogh and Kennedy may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have had to rule the matter raised by Senator McGowan as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of Ministerial responsibility.
