Vol. 156 No. 15

Solicitors (Amendment) Bill, 1998: Report and Final Stages.

Bill received for final consideration.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

I take this opportunity to thank An Cathaoirleach and his staff for the co-operation proffered to us throughout the passage of this Bill through Seanad Éireann. I would also like to thank the Senators who contributed to the debate and all who participated in the democratic process by voting, even if they did not contribute. We had a very constructive debate on an important Bill and I am grateful to the party spokespersons and the Independent Members for their contributions. I also extend my deepest thanks to my staff who worked hard to ensure this legislation was as finely tuned as possible.

I echo the sentiments of the Minister. I thank him, his staff and the staff of the House. In these days of compo culture there is a need for people to cop on, particularly in certain quarters. Some of us have an added interest in this and see it from another side but hopefully the intent of the legislation will come to pass. We have had a useful debate and I hope the Bill will have a speedy passage through the other House.

I would like to be associated with the remarks of Senator Cosgrave and congratulate the Minister and his advisers on bringing forward worthwhile legislation. I thank the Minister for his detailed responses, patience and courtesy.

I too thank the Minister. I came late to the debate and I was impressed by the detailed presentations by Senators Cosgrave and Costello and by the Minister's replies. This is good legislation which the public will welcome. I thank all sides of the House and the Minister for getting this through so quickly and I wish the Minister every success in processing the Bill through the Dáil.

Question put and agreed to.

When is it proposed to sit again?
