Vol. 3 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - SEIZURE OF BICYCLE.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has received repeated complaints and a claim for compensation from W. J. Dowling, postman, Killbricken Post Office, Mountrath, Leix, for the seizure of a new bicycle on May 26th, 1921, by members of the Irish Republican Army; whether an investigation has been promised, if same has been held and with what result; whether it has been established that the bicycle was taken upon the orders of a member of the I.R.A. now holding a high rank in the Free State Army; whether, and if so, when he will be in a position to compensate Dowling for the loss incurred by this illegal seizure.

I have received complaints but, it would appear, no claim for compensation from Mr. Dowling. The bicycle was commandeered on the ground of military necessity. The question of compensation is receiving attention.
