Vol. 6 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLONBULLOGUE (OFFALY) POSTAL DELIVERY.

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has received a memorial from ratepayers and residents in the Clonbullogue district of Offaly protesting against the decision to substitute a tri-weekly postal delivery, instead of the daily deliveries as enjoyed in other rural districts in the same county, and if he will state whether he is prepared to reconsider the matter and revert to the old system of a daily postal delivery in that area?

Protests have been received from persons affected by the reduction of the frequency of delivery on the postal service from Clonbullogue Sub-office to Clongarrett from four days a week in the case of some townlands, and six days a week in the case of others, to a common frequency of three days weekly on the whole post.

I have considered the matter very carefully, but I regret that in consequence of the financial loss involved, it it not practicable to accede to the request for restoration of the former service.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the case is not an exceptional one, the restriction having been carried out in accordance with the Department's present policy of curtailing the frequency of delivery on rural services which are worked at a substantial loss to the revenue.
