Vol. 6 No. 27

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EXTENSION OF TELEPHONE TO MAYO.

asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that the Mayo County Council, all the Urban and Rural District Councils, the Good Government and Merchants' Associations, and the Cumann na nGaedheal Executives of the County have passed resolutions requesting the Postal Authorities to extend the Telephone System to Mayo, and what steps, if any, are being taken to provide this much-needed service.

I have received copies of resolutions passed by various public bodies in County Mayo asking for an extension of telephones to that County, and the matter is under consideration. To connect towns in Mayo with the trunk telephone system, it would be necessary to erect new trunk lines for long distances at a capital expenditure of several thousand pounds, with a correspondingly large annual cost for maintenance. Whether it will be possible to undertake this expenditure will depend upon the amount of local support forthcoming, and the revenue estimated to arise from the opening of Exchanges at the towns concerned.

Arising out of that answer, will the Minister state what is the difference between the Good Government Association and the Cumann na nGaedheal Executive; and whether they are two separate bodies or one body?
