Vol. 7 No. 1

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DEPENDENTS' ALLOWANCES (CO. KILDARE).

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Mrs. Anna O'Brien, of Ovidstown, Straffan, Co. Kildare, wife of Sergeant O'Brien, Army No. 13377, A.M.C., did not receive dependent's allowance for the first three months of her husband's service in the Army; also that since her husband's re-attestation in February, 1924, payment of allowance has been very irregular, and that a further sum of £9 1s. is now due to her to clear to the 12th April, 1924; whether enquiries will be made with a view to settlement.

Mrs. O'Brien was not paid dependents' allowance for the period from the 31st July, 1922, to the 3rd September, 1922, but a cheque for the outstanding amount has now been sent to her. Since the date of her husband's re-attestation, marriage allowance was issued on the 1st, 8th and 22nd March, and on the 11th and 19th instant. All money due up to the latter date has been paid.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that payment of dependent's allowance due to Mrs. Margaret Tiernan, wife of Private John Tiernan, Army No. 32282, who died in the General Military Hospital, Curragh Camp, on the 15th January, 1924, was stopped on the 31st March, 1924; further, whether in reply to Question No. 23 of the 5th March, 1924, it was stated that dependent's allowance would be continued for a period of six months from the date of her husband's death, and whether payment of arrears will be expedited.

A cheque has now been sent to Mrs. Tiernan, which clears the account up to the 19th instant. Arrangements have been made for the allowance to be paid regularly in future.
