Vol. 7 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION ACT BENEFITS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the Workmen's Compensation Act of 1906 was amended in the British Parliament in 1923; that amongst other alterations the maximum compensation to the dependents of a deceased workman was extended to six hundred pounds; also whether a similar Act was passed in Northern Ireland; if he will state whether the amended Act operates in the Saorstát and, if not, if he will take steps in the interests of the workers and their dependents to have the increased benefits extended to the Saorstát.

The answer to the first three parts of the question is in the affirmative, and to the fourth part in the negative. No decision has been taken as to whether an amendment of the existing law is desirable in the Saorstát, nor would the present state of business permit the early introduction of such a Bill.
